# Keyboard commands

> Keyboard commands Flow handles, and the browser shortcuts it leaves alone.

Flow handles a command on the control that has focus. It does not handle the R key.

## Commands Flow handles

In the automation builder, focus a tab that can be closed. Delete or Backspace closes that tab. Left arrow, Right arrow, Home, and End move between those tabs.

In **Reply to requester**, Enter sends the reply when the reply can be sent. Shift-Enter does not send it. Enter does not send while an input method is composing, or for a brief moment after composition ends.

The field **Ask or type /help for slash commands** opens **Conversation slash commands** when all of these are true:

* The text, after removing leading spaces, starts with `/`.
* No command candidate is selected.
* No slash command is active, the active command is unavailable, or that command has a candidate list.

While that list has items, the field handles these keys:

| Key | Result |
| - | - |
| Arrow Up or Arrow Down | Moves the highlight |
| Tab | Applies the highlighted item |
| Escape | Clears the text |
| Enter | Applies the highlighted item when it is not already selected. Otherwise, Enter sends the message. |

Enter sends the message when that list has no items. Shift-Enter does not send it. The same input-method exception applies.

## Commands the browser keeps

Chrome and Safari publish these shortcuts. Flow does not handle them.

| Browser | Shortcut | Result |
| - | - | - |
| Chrome on a Mac | Command-Shift-R | Reloads the current page, ignoring cached content |
| Chrome on Windows or Linux | Control-Shift-R or Shift-F5 | Reloads the current page, ignoring cached content |
| Chrome on Windows or Linux | Control-R or F5 | Reloads the current page |
| Safari | Shift-Command-R | Opens Reader |
| Safari | Esc | Closes Reader |

See [Chrome keyboard shortcuts](https://support.google.com/chrome/answer/157179) and [Keyboard shortcuts and gestures in Safari](https://support.apple.com/guide/safari/keyboard-and-other-shortcuts-cpsh003/mac).

## Change a Safari menu shortcut

macOS can assign a shortcut to a menu command in Safari. The change stays in Safari on that Mac. Some apps do not allow a custom shortcut.

A new shortcut does not work while another command already uses those keys. Change one of the shortcuts first.

Type the menu title exactly as it appears in Safari, in your Mac's language. For a command inside another menu, type the path with `->`.

<Steps>
  <Step title="Open System Settings.">
    From the Apple menu, open **System Settings**.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Open Keyboard Shortcuts.">
    Select **Keyboard**, then **Keyboard Shortcuts**.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Open App Shortcuts.">
    Select **App Shortcuts**.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Choose Safari.">
    Select **Add**. For **Application**, choose **Safari**.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Enter the menu title.">
    In **Menu Title**, enter the command exactly as it appears in the menu.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Set the shortcut.">
    Select **Keyboard Shortcut**, press the keys you want, then select **Done**.
  </Step>
</Steps>

If the shortcut does nothing, the menu title does not match, or another command already uses those keys. Apple describes this in [Create keyboard shortcuts for apps](https://support.apple.com/guide/mac-help/create-keyboard-shortcuts-for-apps-mchlp2271/mac).

Shift-Command-R already opens Reader. To use those keys for another Safari command, first assign the Reader command to different keys. Copy its name from Safari's menu. Apple's shortcut list calls that action Open Reader.
